2022 Maritime Art Prize Mission to Seafarers Victoria
One of a series of works capturing maritime heritage around Balls Head and Berry’s Bay.
As an island continent, with a coastline of over 36,000 kilometres, manning and maintaining our lighthouses prior to automation, was an important part of maritime safety and essential to the development of the nation. Part of the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service, the MV Cape Don is the last surviving example of several purpose-built tender vessels servicing lighthouses along the Australian coast. The Cape Don played a vital role in maintaining maritime safety. She operated from 1963 until 1990. Automation of lighthouses saw the need for these specialised vessels disappear. She is now moored at the historic Balls Head Coal Loader, Sydney, undergoing restoration by the MV Cape Don Society.
